Are You Using Your Situation as an Excuse? JESUS’ Most Surprising Question | John Giftah | Christian Sermon
Tonight's Episode
In John 5, JESUS asks a question that almost feels unnecessary:“Do you want to get well?”
Why would JESUS ask a sick man that?
Of course he wants to get well… right?
But this question goes deeper than the surface.
Sometimes, people may say they want change — healing, breakthrough, provision — but deep inside, they may have grown comfortable in their current situation.
Why?
Because staying stuck can sometimes feel easier than stepping into responsibility, change, or faith.
In this episode, John Giftah unpacks the deeper meaning behind JESUS’ question and challenges listeners to examine their own hearts.
Are we truly ready to move forward, or are we holding on to excuses?
This message will help you reflect, realign, and take a step toward the life GOD is calling you to live.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello, everyone, is such a joy for me to join
Speaker 2: you on this segment of the Field for the Soul
Speaker 2: with John Gifta Podcast. Today. I want to talk to
Speaker 2: you today from an incident recorded in John chapter five
Speaker 2: and share something with you. There's a moment when Jesus
Speaker 2: is a roaching a man who had been a cripple
Speaker 2: for the past thirty eight years, and the Bible says
Speaker 2: in verse six, when Jesus saw him and knew he
Speaker 2: had been ill for a long time. Okay I'm reading
Speaker 2: from the LT version. Is what he says he had
Speaker 2: known that he had been in hell for a long time.
Speaker 2: The scrippled man, he asks him, would you like to
Speaker 2: get well? Would you like to get well? Now, think
Speaker 2: about this now in the nutshell, it feels like that's
Speaker 2: a very irrelevant question to ask. Like a person who
Speaker 2: is sick, obviously they want to get well. A person
Speaker 2: who's broke, obviously they want to get rich, or they
Speaker 2: want financial assistance. Somebody who is not faring well in school,
Speaker 2: they want some assistance so that they will be able
Speaker 2: to do better in their examinations. So why would Jesus
Speaker 2: ask this question, would you like to get well? In fact,
Speaker 2: the response the man gives is I can't, sir, for
Speaker 2: there's no one to help me get into the pool.
Speaker 2: When the water bubbles, someone else obways gets ahead of me.
Speaker 2: Now that's the context of the pool of Betesta, where
Speaker 2: every now and then the Angel of the Load will
Speaker 2: come and stir the water of the pool, and over
Speaker 2: jumped in first would get the miracle. Right, So this
Speaker 2: man is saying, I can't. I'm not able to get it.
Speaker 2: It just doesn't work for me. And he's been here
Speaker 2: in this state for the past thirty eight years. Right,
Speaker 2: and when Jesus asked him would you like to get well?
Speaker 2: It's like a position where God is asking this question
Speaker 2: to each one of us, where we are saying, yes,
Speaker 2: I'm stuck in this area. I'm not in a position
Speaker 2: to move. I'm not in a position to see a breakthrough.
Speaker 2: I feel like, you know what, this is the end
Speaker 2: of the road for me. Maybe in the area of relationship,
Speaker 2: you feel like, oh my gosh, I'm single for a
Speaker 2: long time, nothing is working, Or maybe you feel like
Speaker 2: there's a cycle of brokenness coming in through your family line,
Speaker 2: or maybe there is a cycle of just being broke,
Speaker 2: or money just comes and then it just runs away,
Speaker 2: like you don't understand what is happening, but there's something broken,
Speaker 2: and you're saying, what is going on? So the thing
Speaker 2: I wanted to understand is as much as you know
Speaker 2: we say that we want to be keyre, sometimes the
Speaker 2: question is are you actually in a sense comfortable or
Speaker 2: glad for that disadvantage in your life because you can
Speaker 2: use it as an excuse for you to not progress
Speaker 2: in your life. Think about this for a minute, because
Speaker 2: you see the reason why God asked this question is
Speaker 2: do you want to get well? Do you want to
Speaker 2: get out of this is because he wants to check
Speaker 2: what is your motive? Like a person who's broke, sometimes
Speaker 2: they say, you know what, I feel it's better because
Speaker 2: now I can just get this support system, you know,
Speaker 2: financial aid from somebody. I've seen people actually do that.
Speaker 2: They don't want to take up something because they just say, oh,
Speaker 2: you know what, being broke means, I get assistance from
Speaker 2: the government, or if I'm sick, I will get sympathy
Speaker 2: from people or some help from certain people. I can
Speaker 2: use this for my advantage. So the question to you
Speaker 2: is what is your motive? What is your actual thing
Speaker 2: within you? Do you really want to get well or
Speaker 2: do you actually be in a place where you're actually
Speaker 2: happy that you have this disadvantage for you? Do you
Speaker 2: actually feel like, you know what, I actually don't want
Speaker 2: to get well. I actually don't want that promotion. I
Speaker 2: actually don't want to get married. I actually don't want
Speaker 2: to move her head in life. I just feel like
Speaker 2: this is a good excuse for me to stay here
Speaker 2: and then blame everybody else or blame God for the situation.
Speaker 2: Think about this. I want you to check the intent
Speaker 2: of your heart, because I've seen people talk about this.
Speaker 2: I remember there was a moment where a man got
Speaker 2: healed in a renowned minister's healing crusade, and he got healed,
Speaker 2: he testified, and then later on when he was interviewed,
Speaker 2: he said he didn't get his healing. And when this
Speaker 2: renowned minister contacted him and said you got healed, why
Speaker 2: are you saying you didn't get healed? The man said,
Speaker 2: don't tell anyone. I get this subsidiary aid from this
Speaker 2: particular group. So if I tell I'm healed, they won't
Speaker 2: give me that aida go and work. And this minister
Speaker 2: god so and angry. He said, don't play games with God.
Speaker 2: And if you continue like this, you will get back
Speaker 2: that sickness. And I mean you can debate the geology
Speaker 2: of that statement, but yes the thing, that man got
Speaker 2: the sickness back after a couple of months and probably
Speaker 2: ended up dying as well. So the point I'm trying
Speaker 2: to say here is this, right, you you can't play
Speaker 2: games with God. Right when you say that you have something,
Speaker 2: are you using it as an excuse or do you
Speaker 2: actually want to get well? Do you actually want to
Speaker 2: see an improvement? Do you actually want to grow? And
Speaker 2: you know, see like for example, you know people ask
Speaker 2: me this question. You know you have all of these issues,
Speaker 2: these challenges. Are you using it as an excuse or
Speaker 2: is it actually something that you want to actual deliverance from?
Speaker 2: Think about this so today, if there's an area in
Speaker 2: your life where you know you feel stuck, you feel
Speaker 2: like nothing is moving and whatever, I want you to
Speaker 2: introspect the intent of your heart. Are you actually looking
Speaker 2: for a miracle in that area or are you just
Speaker 2: pushing away? Because here's the thing, what did Jesus do.
Speaker 2: Jesus didn't touch the man, or heal the man or anything.
Speaker 2: He just said, stand up, pick up your mat, and
Speaker 2: walk an instant miracle. That's what Jesus said. Today, the
Speaker 2: Lord is saying, you know what, if you're praying for
Speaker 2: the miracle that breakthrough, if that is not an excuse
Speaker 2: for you, I'm giving you this instruction to take this
Speaker 2: step of faith. I am giving you this instruction to
Speaker 2: do this. I'm giving you this instruction to receive this
Speaker 2: by a word of faith. Are you taking it or
Speaker 2: are you giving it as an excuse and just staying
Speaker 2: where you are? Today? I pray in the name of
Speaker 2: Jesus that this word will convict you to show you
Speaker 2: areas where you portray on the outside that oh my gosh,
Speaker 2: I'm stuck. I'm not able to move ahead because of
Speaker 2: this issue. But the real reason you're not getting deleverance
Speaker 2: from that issue is because you're actually not willing to
Speaker 2: pick up your matt pick up your excuses, get up
Speaker 2: and to take the step of faith that God is
Speaker 2: asking you to take. Emmen, God bless you.
