Borrow Publicly, Pour Privately | Why GOD Sometimes Works Behind Closed Doors? 2 Kings 4 Sermon | John Giftah
Tonight's Episode
You need people, but does everyone need access to everything GOD is doing in your life?In 2 Kings 4:1–7, Elisha tells the widow to borrow empty jars from her friends and neighbors. Her relationships became part of the miracle because she needed other people to provide the vessels.
But then something interesting happens.
After borrowing the jars publicly, Elisha tells her to go inside, shut the door behind herself and her sons, and begin pouring the oil.
The people around her contributed to the miracle, but they were not given access to the private place where the miracle unfolded.
In this fourth episode of the series on Elisha and the Widow’s Oil, John Giftah explores an often-overlooked lesson from this passage: community and boundaries can coexist.
You need healthy relationships. You need people. You need community. But that doesn’t mean everybody needs access to every prayer, prophecy, relationship, opportunity, plan, or next step GOD is developing in your life.
Sometimes people can help provide the jars, while GOD asks you to close the door for the pouring.
In this episode, discover:
- Why isolation is not the answer, but neither is overexposure
- Why someone contributing to your journey does not automatically entitle them to every detail
- How to recognize when GOD may be developing something privately
- Why healthy Christian community and healthy boundaries are not opposites
- What the widow’s closed-door miracle teaches us about protecting what GOD is doing in our lives
Borrow publicly. Pour privately.
Not everyone who contributes to your miracle needs front-row access to the process.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, welcome to this edition of the John Gifter podcast. All through this week, we're looking at various lessons we can take away from the life of Elisha, predominantly revolving around his interaction with the poor widow in 2 Kings chapter 4. There is something that I want to talk about. In yesterday's episode, I was talking to you on the importance of community, the importance of building good relationships, because I believe there's an aspect in this miracle that many times we forget.
Speaker 2: Yes, God multiplied the oil, but... Where did the jars come from? He didn't come from God. God could have multiplied the jars itself, but he did not. He gave this divine instruction through prophet Elisha, where this lady had to go and borrow the jars from her friends and neighbors. And for her to go and borrow the jars from friends and neighbors, she had to maintain good relationships and a good rapport with her friends and neighbors. This is an important aspect. I really challenge you to go back and listen because a lot of Christians miss out on this because they have this holier-than-thou attitude or this idea that they are just called to focus on their spiritual walk and not focus on building good relationships and fellowships.
Speaker 2: with people that God has placed in their life as well. So here's the thing I want you to understand. Yes, she had this miracle where she publicly borrows these jars from everybody, right? And here's the thing I want you to understand. This is the instruction from the prophet saying, you borrow all of them, come back and look at verse four. This is so important, right? Then go into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Shut the door behind you. and pour the olive oil from the flask into the jars and setting up each once it is filled.
Speaker 2: So now think about this. The borrowing of the jars was public in a sense that she had to go out and meet with the friends and neighbors. The relationship study she built was crucial there for her to get that step of the miracle, right? But the next step is very important where the prophet says, shut the door and let the miracle begin. In the sense that sometimes you have to understand, yes, you need to have good relationships, but you also need to know when to shut the door. You also need to know when the boundary has to be fixed in such a way that the people from whom you received certain things or certain element of help in the part of the process of the miracle, you need to know when to shut the door.
Speaker 2: You need to have good healthy boundaries because both have to coexist. You can't be someone who's not having any relationships. You despise building fellowships with people. You can't be like that. At the same time, you can't be an open book where like this lady, she says, oh, guys, come, come. Let's all together sit and see God do the miracle. No, the miracle happened privately. Even though she involved people in getting the jars, the miracle happened privately. And that is an important thing that you need to understand.
Speaker 2: Just because you take the help of people, just because people... invested in you or helped you in certain season or helped you in the process of the miracle in some form or the other, it does not mean that you have to be an open book for them to get the front row seat to watch the miracle unfold. I hope you're getting what I'm saying. Because when the miracle happened, it was just she and us two sons behind closed doors. So maybe someone gave you the jar or in a sense, like maybe they gave you a point of contact.
Speaker 2: Maybe they opened a door for you. Maybe they helped you with a little seed money. Maybe they helped you with a little bit of advice in some area. Maybe they helped you or invested in you. Maybe they actually helped you in one season of your life in a great dimension. Great dimension. Don't despise that. Don't forget the good that they did. But that does not mean that you have to share everything with them. You need to know when to set the boundary. Because you can get the jar from someone. But you don't need to tell them every prophecy, every prayer, every plan, every relationship, every opportunity, every next move and every private thing that the Lord wants to do over your life.
Speaker 2: Because some people... cannot handle the miracle God is about to do they're like oh my gosh we gave you the jar so now give me my portion of the money or you know they could have come some may or may not have had good intentions you never know because only when you are flourishing you will know the real intentions of a lot of people I mean, there are both sides to this. Sometimes you'll know the real intentions when you go through a storm, but sometimes you'll also get to know the real intentions of people when you start flourishing.
Speaker 2: Some people want to connect with you when they see numbers. Some people want to connect with you when they see that you are connecting with somebody else that they want to be connected with. You have to be careful. You have to be careful because you need people Because the jar is going to not come from God. It's going to come through people. But you also need to know when to shut the door. Because that is the place where discernment is key. That is the place where you need to understand that everybody that has helped you, invested in you, do not require to get the front row seat to witness the private miracle God wants to do over your life.
Speaker 2: And so this is what I want to close with, right? You need the community, but you also need boundaries. So borrow the jar, close the door and obey God. I hope this message really challenged you. And I'd really recommend that you leave a comment if you're checking this out on YouTube or Facebook and share this with somebody. And remember, you need community, but you also need to set boundaries. your boundaries. Amen. God bless you.
