How to Overcome Overwhelming Emotions with the Holy Spirit? John Giftah | Christian Sermon
Tonight's Episode
Emotions can be destructive if left unchecked—and the truth is, you cannot tame them on your own strength. In this powerful message from the series on emotional healing, John Giftah dives into 1 Samuel 16:1, where GOD tells Samuel to stop mourning Saul and commands: "Fill your flask with anointing oil and get going."
It’s easy for people to say "just forget the past and move on," but when someone did you wrong, cost you a season, or caused you deep pain, positive thinking and human willpower aren’t enough. True victory and peace come when you stop relying solely on your own effort and allow the Holy Spirit to fill you, wash over your wounds, and take control of your heart.
🔥 Key Takeaways in this Episode:
Why Willpower Fails: Why you cannot control intense emotional pain, trauma, or bitterness by yourself.
The Meaning of the Anointing Oil: Connecting Samuel’s flask of oil to the supernatural infilling of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11).
Dealing with Unfair Pain: Finding peace when you are hurting because of someone else’s mistake or betrayal.
The Tidal Wave of the Spirit: Allowing the Spirit of GOD to wash over negative emotions, bitterness, and past baggage.
Moving from Flesh to Spirit: Walking in Romans 8:6—where a mind governed by the Spirit brings life and peace.
📖 Key Scripture:
"The Lord said to Samuel, 'How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way...'" — 1 Samuel 16:1
"The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." — Romans 8:6

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, welcome to this edition of the Fuel for the Soul with John Gifter podcast. All through this week, we're looking at various lessons we can take away from the life of Samuel, who is actually mourning King Saul in 1 Samuel chapter 16. in line with which we want to talk about how do you deal with the pain? How do you process the pain? I really challenge you to go back and listen to the previous two segments because I believe they help you in making the foundation right so that you can proceed well as well.
Speaker 2: So when you look at the first verse, it says that God is asking, how long are you going to mourn over Saul? For I have rejected him as king. God is saying, you know what? Saul is history. Stop looking at it. God is reminding you today, the person you're crying about is history. The person who did you wrong did it. But I want you to forget about it or reject because I myself have rejected this person. Why are you still holding on? OK, now I want to talk about something very important. It's easier said than done.
Speaker 2: Right. It's very easy to just say, oh, you've got to forget the past. You've got to move on, man. But in reality, it's not easy.
Speaker 1: Right.
Speaker 2: So when you look at this, there's something very important. The Lord is saying, fill your flask with anointing oil and get going. Fill your flask with anointing oil and get going. So the Lord is giving him his next instruction. OK, now, before he gives him the next instruction, because I want to just slow down and process these things. All right. I can take this entire passage through this week. But I thought, you know what? Even if we are just going to look at just one or two verses or just the first verse through this week, I feel it still makes sense for us to.
Speaker 2: take in and chew the word and apply it in our lives. OK, so the Lord is saying, fill your flask with anointing oil. Now, understand something. Anointing oil is not just an oil. It's in essence the Holy Spirit. Right now, in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was, you know, shown in the form of like the anointing oil or things like that. you know even if you see before jesus said oh i'm going to send in the helper the holy spirit and what happened even before that the holy spirit came in in the form of a dao and all of that if you see even in genesis 1 it talks about how the spirit of the lord was hovering on the face of the earth all of these things are there but here's the thing i want to talk about very important here right today because of what jesus did on the cross of calvary Because you have believed and got saved through the work of Jesus, the grace of God, not by your works, but by faith in him.
Speaker 2: What happens is the Holy Spirit is living on the inside of you and me. You and I have that anointing. You and I have that anointing. Spirit of God, the scripture talks about in Romans 8, 11, the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in the inside of you and me. So today I want you to understand here he's saying fill your flask with the anointing oil. Right. In other words, in a sense, if you want to look at it in the light of the New Testament, it would basically be saying to you that the scripture says you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, filled with the anointing.
Speaker 2: Because I want you to understand, you can quote scriptures, you can do the act of prayer, but if you really want to experience power, the empowerment, if you want to walk in the spirit, if you want to bear the fruit of the spirit, you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. And this is a wake-up call for you. Maybe if you're in that place where you're saying, my emotions are playing it. My emotions are controlling me. My emotions are just, you know, it's just not enough for me. Like, I just can't come to terms with this, John.
Speaker 2: This is so bad. This is so mean. Even the other day, somebody was saying things that they were so bitter against someone because they did them wrong. They were so hurt. They didn't know what to do. And they said to the fact that they wanted to cut themselves like some people try to do things like that. Can I tell you something? You see, emotions can be really, really bad if you can't tame it. And I want to tell you something. You cannot tame the hurt. emotions by yourself if you try to do it by yourself you can't do it you can go for the best tool out there you can go for therapy all that has its place no doubt about it but i want to tell you something the scripture talks about in the book of romans 8 a mind controlled by the flesh leads to sin and death but the mind controlled by the spirit leads to life and peace if you're feeling like john I'm not able to control my emotions.
Speaker 2: The person did me wrong, John. Because of them, I'm struggling, John. Because of that person, my entire childhood was spoiled, John. Because of this person, I lost so much in my life. Because of somebody else's mistake, I'm suffering. Yes, I understand. It's not just emotions. It's the physical pain. You lost a job because somebody else did something wrong. Now today you're suffering financially. Yes, I understand. It's real. Why Prophet Samuel was crying that King Saul was in a very bad shape was because Prophet Samuel was directly involved.
Speaker 2: People are going to say, oh, you were the one who anointed Saul, right? Like, how could you make such a mistake? People could have pointed the finger at Prophet Samuel. It would have come on him in some way or the other. So he could feel like, oh, my gosh. What is happening? Maybe you're crying like that. But the Lord is reminding you and saying, yes, your emotions are playing up. Your emotions are making you feel bitter and angry. That's where you have to process that and say, God, Holy Spirit, I want you to fill me so much that the emotions are not able to control me.
Speaker 2: That you override me. you've uh like how do i give you the description is like how you look at waves right recently it's so sad i want to just say what a prayer for whatever is happening in nepal i really challenge you to say what a prayer even as you're watching um but here's the thing what is happening is that the water is coming at such a level with such speed that it's just washing over everything it's washing over people washing over the entire territory houses and everything right now I want you to imagine the Spirit of God washing over every dirt in your life every emotion that is not of God in your life everything the Spirit of God just sticks and washes over He just fills you up see that is the image I want you to have when you are saying Holy Spirit fill me when you take that intentional step to be filled with the Holy Spirit that is what will make the difference Because when the Spirit is in control of your life, like the scripture says, that when the Spirit is the one that's leading you and guiding you and taking you forward, what happens is everything takes its rightful place.
Speaker 2: So today I want to tell you this important thing. That no matter how much you love the Lord, you pray, quote scriptures, read the Bible, that's all great. There's a place for all of that. Take time to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Take time for the infilling because only when there's that infilling will you receive the thing that the Lord wants to do over your life. Amen. I really challenge you to leave a comment if you're checking this out on YouTube or Facebook and share this with someone and I will see you back next time.
Speaker 2: God bless you.
