How to Handle TRIGGERS as a Christian? | Hannah Sermon Series | John Giftah
Tonight's Episode
Do you feel pressured to "just move on" or "get over" past pains? In Part 3 of our series on the life of Hannah, John Giftah tackles a topic we often avoid: Dealing with Triggers.John explains that being a child of GOD doesn't mean you won't be triggered by certain dates, music, or even smells that remind you of a difficult season. Using the life of Hannah, he explores the two types of triggers she faced: the intentional taunting from her rival, Peninnah, and the unintentional reminders from her husband, Elkanah.
Sharing vulnerably about his own 14-year journey in ministry, his wait as a Christian single, and the triggers he faced after a mass layoff, John reveals that the key isn't avoiding the trigger—it's what you do with it. If you’ve ever felt "sized up" by others or looked down on because of unanswered prayers, this message will help you turn your pain into fuel for prayer.
Key Highlights:
The Reality of Triggers: Why it’s okay to still feel the sting of the past.
Intentional vs. Unintentional Triggers: Navigating the "Peninnahs" and "Elkanahs" in your life.
Personal Reflections: John’s journey through job loss and "ministry plateaus."
Hannah’s Pivot: How crying out to the LORD (verse 10) changes your countenance, even before your circumstances change.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Helloveryone. Welcome to this edition of the Fuel for the Soul with John GIFTAP podcast. All through this week, we are looking at various lessons that we can take away from the life of Hannah, revolving specifically around First Samuel Chapter One. The things that we often deal with, and we don't talk about this frequently, is that certain things can trigger us and we need to understand and accept that it's part and parcel of our life. Like what do I mean by that? There may be a bad break that you had once upon a time, maybe you lost a job, maybe you had a bad breakup, maybe you had a family member that you lost, or a friend that you lost, or something.
Speaker 2: And what could happen is every time you come across a certain date, maybe that birthday, or you look at the anniversary date or the day you met that person, or you look at mother's day, father's date, could be anything. What happens is those other moments you tend to be triggered, or it could just be sometimes you listen to a certain music and you remember enjoying listening to that music with that person once upon a time, so that music could trigger you. Or maybe a smell a perfume could trigger you because you remember gifting that same perfume to somebody a long time ago, and they're no longer a part of your life right now.
Speaker 2: So now sometimes you may feel like this is happening after so many years, and I'm still being triggered. And sometimes people may just tell you, hey, you should get better at this. You're a child of the king. You should not keep holding on to this after this many years. You may be feeling like being pressured by people who say, how could you think about this person who left you ten years ago? How could you still be triggered by that music that was a part of your life maybe twenty five years ago.
Speaker 2: But I wanted to listen to this caful because this is a powerful revelation that really caught my attention. Because you can be a child of God, you can be a prayerful person, you can love the Lord, you can be in the right place spiritually and still have things that can trigger you. That's what you see from the life of Hannah, because when you look at verse seven in the first chapter of for Samuel, you realize that year after year when the family moved to get the sacrifice done for the year, you know what happened every time this happened.
Speaker 2: A rival who had more children, whereas she'd struggle to have one child. You know what would happen, would taunt her and you don't have a kid. And her husband, who means, well, what happens. He's giving to her rival, Pinaya and her children the portion from the sacrifice, and he's giving her a special portion. But by giving that, it's just unintentional, right, Like you were just saying, you know what, I'm giving her Penaya and children, but to you, you don't have a child. So she he's just giving her differently from what he's giving her rival Penaia.
Speaker 2: Now, even by giving that differently, she could be triggered because in that process she knows, oh, you know what, I'm not like her. I don't have a child, So that's why I'm being treated differently. And in that process, what could happen is that she could feel like, oh, you know, it's like saying I know who you are. You don't have a child. She has a child. She has children in fact, So sometimes you may feel that some people treat you in a certain way, treat you differently just by the fact that God has not handsted your prayer.
Speaker 2: You know what I mean. Like, you know they're treating you differently. You know that by the way they treat you, they're saying, we know who you are, we know that this is this is an area of lack in your life, This is an area of unancid prayer in your life. So by unintentionally they could actually trigger that in you. Now I'm gonna has something more, okay, but listen to this. The other thing is her rival Pinaya also was not keeping quiet. She constantly taunted her for not having a kid. See, I want you to understand something.
Speaker 2: You're right. I've seen this in different areas of my life. Like two of the biggest areas that I've been praying for God to show up is that the ministry would continue to grow and reach new levels because it's been fourteen years in the run and it's not where it's supposed to be ideally for the amount of efforts that I've put. So that's one area I've been praying. And the other area is the area where I'm at a Christian sayingle waiting on the lot to bring the right person into my life. So these two big areas, what happens is what I've noticed is that you know, some people want to taunt you, like, oh you're still not married, or they just size you up, or we know who you are, like you know, they don't value you for the amount of effort you put for fourteen years.
Speaker 2: They size you up, they write you off, they look down on you, they put you down because of the numbers. And you know, you get what I'm saying. How Pennia was treated because she had children was different from how Hannah was treated because she did not have a child. You get what I'm saying that the difference of treatment can also be a trigger. I still remember when I lost my job last year due to a mass layoff. There were random things that would trigger me over those months because till I got the new job after seven months of waiting on the law.
Speaker 2: Random things including just certain smells. If I would go to the mall and get the same smell that I used to get when I would go to the mall before losing that job, that would trigger me. Or just seeing somebody's WhatsApp or Instagram status or story would trigger me. Or just the backpack from my previous organization would trigger me. People will say, oh, you got to move on, But how can I move on when I see that back and I'm triggered. I'm remembering because I still haven't seen God show up in the next area of my life, in the next job.
Speaker 2: Are you getting what I'm saying? See, this is something so practical because most people are not talking about it. People just say or just learn to move on, just learn to just forget the past. Yes, there is a place to move on, you know, forget the past and all of that. But also understand there are also specific moments when you can still be triggered, and you can't avoid. See that certain things I would say, if certain things trigger you, avoid that. If going to a certain mall triggered me, I stop going to that mall, okay.
Speaker 2: But certain things, like Hannah going to this sacrifice every year was something she could not avoid. The scripture says they went year after year. Can you imagine the pain Hannah would have. Oh again, and it's this time of the year again, I have to go again. This difference of treatment would happen again. My rival would taunt me, she could feel, she could be in so much pain like that. Can you try to understand what I'm trying to tell you is it's okay to be triggered. It's okay because a lot of people just want you to hear this that, oh, you should not be trigered, you should be better than this.
Speaker 2: But I'm giving you a different word. It's okay to be triggered because Hannah was also triggered year after year, the same taunting, the same unanswered praise, the same difference of the way she was treated. But but the good news is that when Hannah was treated like that, you know what she did. She didn't try to prove herself. She didn't sit in depression. The scripture says she went and cried to the Lord. When you look at verse ten on verse you see she's crying and praying to the Lord. See, there's nothing wrong in getting triggered.
Speaker 2: But what makes the difference is what you do when you're getting triggered. Are you sitting in depression or are you crying to the Lord. Are you just in bed saying I'm just giving up in life? Or are you running to your father and saying, God, I want you to help me. God, I just want to empty myself out to you. That's what Hannah did, and that is what changed our countenance. That is what changed like even though a circumstances not changed. The Bible says that her countenance changed, that she was radiant with joy.
Speaker 2: Oh, when you take your triggers to God, he will take care of your pain and give you his peace. That's what happened to me. That's what will happen to you. Every time I was triggered, or every time I'm triggered. Lord, another birthday and I'm single. Instead of allowing that pain to come or to be reminded of that pain, I could run to the Lord. Lord, I know you're in control. Oh Lord, I'm seeing other people progressing before me, and I'm still struggling to scratch the surface in the ministry. Lord, I trust you and I commit that triggered into your hands.
Speaker 2: When you do that, you will be amazed by how your life will start turning around for good. I really challenge you to leave a comment and share this with someone. God bless you.
