When People Mean Well But Can’t Help | Hannah Sermon Series | John Giftah
Tonight's Episode
Have you ever tried to share your deepest dreams or pains with someone you love, only to have them offer "surface-level" advice that doesn't quite hit the mark?In Part 2 of our series on the life of Hannah, John Giftah explores a difficult reality: sometimes the people who love us most are simply incapable of meeting our deepest needs. We look at Elkanah’s response to Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:8—where he tries to offer logical comfort for a spiritual and emotional longing he couldn't fulfill.
John shares vulnerably from his own 14 years in ministry and his journey as a Christian single, highlighting how easy it is to get frustrated when others don't see the "gold" or the "fruit" we are working so hard for. If you feel like you’re constantly trying to convince people of your value or your vision, this message is a call to follow Hannah’s lead—to stop explaining yourself to man and start pouring your heart out to God.
Key Takeaways:
Understanding the difference between a "mental need" (pep talk) and a "soul longing."
Why being "grateful" for what you have doesn't mean you can't be honest about what's missing.
The power of turning from human logic (Elkanah) to divine intervention (The Lord).
Encouragement for those waiting on ministry growth, career breakthroughs, or the right life partner.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Welcome to this edition of the Fuel for the Soldier John Gifta podcast. All through this week, we're looking at various lessons that we can take away from the life of Hannah, predominantly revolving around for Samuel chapter one. See I want you to understand when you're going through life, you may be feeling like John, like no matter what I have this area of desire or a longing in a certain area, I have a dream from the Lord to take steps to see maybe towards your calling, your ministry, or it could be regarding a business venture, but you feel like the people around you are not able to understand and give you what you need.
Speaker 2: A get what I'm saying. When you think about Hannah, she was blessed to have a husband who lowed her, who in fact went to the great extent of giving her special treatment, special favor, special portion. The scripture talks about this in the fifth verse. But I want you to understand that in the midst of all of this, when you look at verse eight, she is pretty disheartened because she's not having a child. And what happens because of that is she's not eating. She's in a very discouraged and pointed state.
Speaker 2: It's also because she's being taunted by her rival because of not having a kid. She's longing for it, but she's not able to get It's not in her hands right, She's praying about it, she's taking steps, but it's not happening. But here's the thing about it. To understand, her husband, Alcanah says in verse eight, Hey, why are you discouraged? Why are you not eating? Why are you crying? Why don't you just understand and be happy? You know? Am I not more worth to you than ten sons? This is what Alcanah says.
Speaker 2: See, now, we do not know the intention with which Alcanah said this. Maybe he was genuinely concerned about her because he loved her, but he could not do anything. It was just not possible in the natural and he was helpless himself, So we do not know the intention. Maybe it sounds like he was insensitive, but it could also be that he was helpless. Right, So what I want you to understand is that sometimes you may feel like people around you are not able to give you what you need. No matter what you feel like, oh, I wish my family supported me better in my calling, or I wish that these friends of mine could understand the real pain with which I'm sharing this.
Speaker 2: You feel like I wish people were most supportive to the cause that I'm actually enduring this. But sometimes you have to understand that people around you, they may mean well, they may have a good heart, they may really love you, but unfortunately they are just not able to help you. So don't be disappointed with people. Don't get mad at them for not giving you what you need. Like maybe in some area you're praying, oh, I want this opportunity, Why aren't these people helping me. Maybe they have some protocol, they have certain restrictions, they have certain things behind the scenes.
Speaker 2: You do not know why, but they're just not able to help you. Or maybe you're feeling like, why aren't these people giving in a word for you? Maybe one word can help you get that divine connection, but it's just not happening. But Hannah doesn't go and try to explain ourselves to our husband, saying, hey, please try to understand my longing. Try to understand the pain with which I'm sharing. The scripture talks about this that you know. He says this in verse eight. By verse ten, you see Hannah goes and prays to the Lord.
Speaker 2: She's not trying to, you know, try to convince hel Knna her husband. She's not trying to make him understand what she's doing. She's just crying to the Lord. This is some important message to each one of us. This is such an important message to each one of us. Instead of trying to convince people, trying to make them to understand, sometimes the best thing you can do is be like Hannah, say, you know what, let me cry to the Lord, Let me pour my heart to the Lord. These people, no matter how much I tried to convince them.
Speaker 2: They just don't understand. You. See, I give this analogy half out. If you're physically hungry, right, what you need is physical food. Right. If somebody comes in tells you, hey, don't worry, and gives you a pep talk, never give up, it's not going to help you. That may help you if you have a mental need, right, if you're mentally not well, but that's not going to help you when you have a physical need. You get what I'm saying. So when you have a physical need, you would like somebody to come in and, you know, give you the physical food physical need to be met.
Speaker 2: So this is exactly what happened with Hannah. She had a need or a longing to have a child, but Alkenna did not provide her with that because he could not. Right, if you could, he would, but he could not. So he's only giving her a sense of encouragement, a sense of logical explanation. Hey, am I not better to you than ten sons? But unfortunately that was not the answer to her question. Her question was not oh, I'm not having love. Her question was not do you love me? Her question was this longing in me can be only fulfilled by this, and I feel helpless.
Speaker 2: So I hope you're able to understand. Sometimes I've seen this in my life when I'm saying, oh God, I've been spending so much time, so many years. I've been investing this my fourteenth theory in the ministry, and I've been doing this for a long time, and I wish to see more growth on the content side. I wish to see that all of this gets, you know, more response and engagement. That's why I challenge you guys to engage with the videos. Don't just watch, you know, share this with others, leave a comment.
Speaker 2: It really helps. So I share all of this. I'm putting all of this. Sometimes I feel like, oh my gosh, I do all of this, but people are not able to understand. People say, oh, why do you worry so much if you don't get the response. But the problem is I put my heart into this. I put my heart and soul into the I've invested time, money, and my entire being into this for the last fourteen years. Ministry has been such an integral part. This amount of sacrifice, the amount of abuse, the amount of opposition, and to endure for it.
Speaker 2: So it's not easy when somebody just says, hey, you should be just grateful or pay happy that you have a good job. You should just be happy that you have a good family. Yes, I'm happy, I'm grateful for it. But at the same time, there is a need when I want to see the fruit of my labor. There is a need where I want to see that all that effort I've put in bears much fruit for the glory of God. So that is when I realize, like Anna, you have a need, you have a longing that no matter how other people try to understand, they may not be able to understand what you feel.
Speaker 2: Now, even as a Christian single, I've been sharing this. You know, you know you have the desire that you want to meet the right person. Other people will just say, oh, just settle for something. Why are you not just settling for something? But you know that God is leading you in a certain direction. God has put that uh, you know, conviction in you to you know, wait to marry the right person. So other people don't understand, and they just give you selface level advice. You get what I'm saying. That's when I stood my ground like Hannah, to say, you know what I'm going to wait like Hannah did.
Speaker 2: I'm going to pray about that need because I realized other people may not understand. Other people will not be able to comprehend, but you know what, by God understands. And today that is the challenge I want to leave with you, guys that instead of getting to that place of frustration why they're not able to understand? Why are they not able to meet my needs? Understand? If they could, they would, but they just can't. So get to the place where you look up to God to meet your niece and cry to the Lord.
Speaker 2: And I pray the God who answered Hannah's prayers hans your prayers at the right appointed time. I really challenge you to leave a comment and share this with someone and I will see you back next time. God bless you.
