Know What to Carry | A Hidden Lesson from David | John Giftah | Christian Sermon
Tonight's Episode
In 1 Samuel 17, there is a small detail in David’s story that reveals a powerful principle. When David arrived at the battlefield, the Bible says he left his supplies with the keeper of the baggage.
But later we see that he still carried his shepherd’s staff and sling from his shepherd’s bag.
This means David knew what to leave behind and what to carry forward.
He did not carry unnecessary things into the next moment, but he made sure to keep the tools connected to his calling.
Many times in life we carry things that weigh us down — distractions, responsibilities, or burdens that are not meant for the next season.
But wisdom is knowing what to release and what to carry with you.
In this episode of Fuel for the Soul with John Giftah, discover the hidden lesson from David’s story and learn how to discern what belongs in your next season.
Not everything should be carried forward — but the things connected to your destiny must stay with you.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Welcome to this edition of the Fuel for
Speaker 2: the Soul with John gift podcast where I want to
Speaker 2: talk to you today on another lesson that we can
Speaker 2: learn from the life of David. This old week, we've
Speaker 2: been talking and learning about different things we can learn
Speaker 2: from First time El Scepter seventeen and I really recommend
Speaker 2: you to go back and check the powerful lessons that
Speaker 2: you can inculcate in your life. And even right now,
Speaker 2: I want to share something very important with you to
Speaker 2: give you a little bit of context in case you're
Speaker 2: not familiar with this passage. This is the moment when
Speaker 2: David is going to meet his brothers who are in
Speaker 2: the army, and that is that giving him instruction, saying
Speaker 2: I want you to go and give them food, and
Speaker 2: I want you to give me a report of what
Speaker 2: is happening and what is going on. And David is
Speaker 2: going there diligently. And here's the thing. I wanted to
Speaker 2: understand that when he goes there, he comes to know
Speaker 2: about what is happening with regard to Goliath taunting the army,
Speaker 2: and everybody is so scared, not knowing what to do.
Speaker 2: So I want to share two verses with you specifically
Speaker 2: from this and share an important lesson from this that
Speaker 2: we can learn. When you look at Worse number twenty two,
Speaker 2: it says David left his things with the keeper of
Speaker 2: supplies and hurried out to the ranks to greet his brothers. Now,
Speaker 2: I wanted you to understand, like I said, if you
Speaker 2: see through those verses, now David had carried a lot
Speaker 2: of I mean things that his dad had given a
Speaker 2: basket of roasted grain and the ten loaves of bread,
Speaker 2: and you know, stuff like that that Jesse had given.
Speaker 2: In verse seventeen, you can seck this out, so you're
Speaker 2: in verse twenty to David leaves those things out, and
Speaker 2: then he goes to meet his brothers. Right, and then
Speaker 2: a long story made short when you see he's getting
Speaker 2: ready to defeat Coliat. Okay, yes, the thing I wanted
Speaker 2: you to understand. He has this encounter with David, sorry,
Speaker 2: King Saul, and then finally he agrees to do it,
Speaker 2: and long story made short. Right. If you look at
Speaker 2: verse forty, it says he picked up five smooth stones
Speaker 2: from a stream and put them into his shepherd's bag. Then,
Speaker 2: armed only with the shepherd staff and sling, he started
Speaker 2: across the valley to fight the Philistines. So Philistine, that
Speaker 2: is Goliath. Here's the thing I want you to understand. Right,
Speaker 2: when you look at verse twenty two, he left the
Speaker 2: supplies with the keeper. When you look at verse forty,
Speaker 2: it says that he picked up stones and put them
Speaker 2: in his shepherd's bag, which means that he was still
Speaker 2: carrying the shepherd's bag and he was carrying the staff
Speaker 2: and the sling. Okay, I wanted to understand something here.
Speaker 2: David knew what to carry and what not to carry,
Speaker 2: and he knew what to carry when to carry, you
Speaker 2: know what I mean. So when David went to meet
Speaker 2: with his brothers, he was not doing a shepherding job.
Speaker 2: He has given his sheep into the hands of another shepherd,
Speaker 2: the Bible says. And then he comes here, right, he
Speaker 2: is taking care of the sheep and he's come here,
Speaker 2: so he's not doing a shepherding job. But even here,
Speaker 2: he brought his shepherd's bag, shepherd's staff, and shepherd's sling. Right,
Speaker 2: I wanted to understand this. And even when he comes here,
Speaker 2: what happens. He keeps those items, those supplies, and then
Speaker 2: he still does not leave his sling and the shepherd
Speaker 2: bag there. He's carrying those with him, you know what
Speaker 2: I mean. So listen, this is a very powerful lesson
Speaker 2: because a lot of people miss this. They take the
Speaker 2: wrong things with them, and they're carrying the wrong things
Speaker 2: with them. David did not carry the supplies when he
Speaker 2: was going to meet those brothers. He gave those supplies
Speaker 2: to the concerned person and then he walks. But when
Speaker 2: he's keeping those supplies there, he's not keeping his staff
Speaker 2: and the sling also, you know what I mean, Like
Speaker 2: he's not walking like a free burn man. What I
Speaker 2: wanted to understand is certain things that you need to
Speaker 2: carry carry with you, but learn what to keep so
Speaker 2: that you don't have to carry things that you don't
Speaker 2: have to carry. But I also always be a to
Speaker 2: carry things that are connected to your calling. This is
Speaker 2: an important lesson we need to learn. You know, for example, right,
Speaker 2: if I'm saying I'm called to be a content creator,
Speaker 2: for example, right, Like one example I want to give you.
Speaker 2: So if I'm going to be like, you know what,
Speaker 2: I never know when I'm going to get an opportunity
Speaker 2: to make a video. Right, I had to carry the
Speaker 2: phone with me. Right, I have to make sure that, Okay,
Speaker 2: I have the phone with me so I can give
Speaker 2: it take the video. One of the lessons I learned
Speaker 2: in recent times, especially is that there were times I
Speaker 2: did not carry extra books. I've authored multiple books, right,
Speaker 2: I didn't carry extra books with me, and I would
Speaker 2: meet somebody and I would want to give a book
Speaker 2: to them, and I'd be like, oh my gosh, I
Speaker 2: wish I'd carried an extra book. I wish I'd carried
Speaker 2: my book, you know what I mean. So this is
Speaker 2: a lesson to learn. Like David brought things that were
Speaker 2: connected to his destiny because he was always prepared for
Speaker 2: that opportunity.
Speaker 1: Whereas when he.
Speaker 2: Knows that he doesn't have to carry the supplies wherever
Speaker 2: like even to carry. Imagine if he was carrying all
Speaker 2: the supplies and going to fight Goliat, it makes no sense, right.
Speaker 2: So if you are called for something, there are times
Speaker 2: you need to let go of things that are burdens,
Speaker 2: or there are cares, or there are things that you're
Speaker 2: carrying that you don't have to carry. You need to
Speaker 2: put it off and take with you only the things
Speaker 2: that are connected to your destiny. That's a lesson to
Speaker 2: learn from David. He carried things that were connected to
Speaker 2: his calling, his purpose, his destiny, and put off the
Speaker 2: things that were not connected to his destiny at that point.
Speaker 2: And that's a lesson that I want to share with
Speaker 2: you guys today, that you will make sure that in
Speaker 2: any area of your life that you are saying, I'm
Speaker 2: praying for God to give me a Goliath moment, or
Speaker 2: for God to help me to fulfill my purpose, you
Speaker 2: need to make sure that you know when to carry
Speaker 2: what and when to leave something and carry certain things
Speaker 2: with you wherever you go.
