Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: I just want to ask you this question today. Are you in a place in your life where you're struggling to get good sleep. You're saying, John, I go to bed, but I'm spending hours just rolling on the bed. I'm not able to sleep well. The Bible is very clear. When you look at Psalm four, verse eight, it says, in peace, I will lie down and sleep for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Now. So it says in peace I will lie down and sleep. But some of you are saying, in peace, I lie down, but I'm just rolling on the floor, rolling on the bed.
Speaker 2: I'm just not able to get sleep. Right, You may be feeling like that, even if you see in the Book of Proverbs three verse twenty four it says when you lie down, you'll not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. But in reality it's just not sweet at all. And you're like, oh my gosh, John, what is happening. What is happening? Well, I want to share an important thing with you, and I want to take this forward. Okay, when you look at the incident of Jesus coming the storm, there's a powerful revelation that has got my attention.
Speaker 2: Okay, just to give you context of this situation, right, the crossing of the lake, depending on the weather conditions, the wind, and also depending on the or the exact route that they were taking, would take them roughly an hour to up to even three hours. The journey across the lake, which was also the Sea of Galilee. All right, So when you look at that incident, yeah, I want you to just picture this, okay. So they get into the boat. Jesus is telling the disciples, let's go to the other side. So they got into the boat and started out Verse twenty three.
Speaker 2: This is from Luke chapter eight. All right, it says as they set sail, Jesus settled down for a nap. Now, just imagine on a practical scale, right, if you're imagining that this old journey would take about an hour and a half to make, maybe let's say two hours, okay, So as they set sail, Jesus settled down for a nap. Maybe the settling down could have taken ten to fifteen minutes, talking to people saying, okay, guys, I'm going to take this place. I'm going to lie down here. In one of the translations, it says that he was I think in the Book of Mark it says that he was taking a cushion and then he was sleeping.
Speaker 2: His head was on the cushion. So which means that you would have, like imagine the practicality, right, like ask someone for the cushion, and so this would have taken roughly around ten to fifteen minutes, let's say. And the Bible says, it's so powerful because I want you to understand both the translations in the Book of not just translations the two Gospels. In the Gospel according to Luke, as well as in the gospel according to Mark, it says that as they set sail and Jesus settled down for a nap, But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake.
Speaker 2: But soon a fear storm came down on the lake. This is from the Analty version in the gospel according to Luke. And when you look at the gospel according to Mark again it says that in verse thirty seven, but soon a fear storm came. So if you take that on an average, if you think that around a two hour journey, and they started out, so in about ten to fifteen minutes, Jesus was settling down for a nap. Okay. And when you see the word soon, if it said something like after some time a storm came, could mean even after one other storm could have come, Okay, But the word is very particular that soon the storm came.
Speaker 2: If it said that the storm came when they were nearing the destination, that's a different story. If the storm came, you know, in some time, it could mean maybe after forty five minutes. But when you say soon, maybe on a rough scale, in the practical point of view, it means that the storm would have come roughly around in the thirty minute mark. Okay, so just imagine this. In ten to fifteen minutes, Jesus would have got settled and he's going to lie down or you know, finding a cushion, and in about the thirty minute mark is when the storm came.
Speaker 2: Because the storm came very soon, it didn't come later, right, So, which means that in a matter of ten to fifteen minutes, Jesus got went to sleep. All right. Now, think about this. Jesus did not wake up because of the commotion when the disciples were screaming and shouting, Oh my gosh, we were in real danger. Understand, they were actually in real danger. This was not a spiritual storm. This was a real danger. I'll talk about that in another segment, but I wanted to understand it was real danger.
Speaker 2: They were in Andy's the thing. While they were in that moment, Jesus was not working up by their commotion. Jesus was not woken up by you know, by the tossing of the waves. Jesus was not woken up by you know, the wind or the noise or any of that. The disciples went and woke them up. If you look at verse thirty eight, right, it says the disciples woke them up. Dan Jesus woke up, which means that in a matter of ten to fifteen minutes, Jesus went into deep sleep. Think about this, guys, Think about this.
Speaker 2: In ten to fifteen minutes, Jesus went into deep sleep. Whereas we are struggling to get sleep after rolling on the bed for one to do us, where is the problem? Think about this. Jesus operated in the balance of good sleep. He was having that sleep as a you know, like a sweet sleep. The Bible is saying, even if you see one more words, right, I really love that, just give me a second. I think it's found in Psalms seven, verse two it says that you know, he gives his beloveds sleep. Okay, In one of the translations, it's like sleep is like a gift for the beloved.
Speaker 2: So sleep is supposed to be a gift. Sleep is supposed to be a part of are routine in a proper balanced way, so that we can function more productively. But here's the problem. We struggle to sleep. Whereas Jesus was able to go into deep sleep in just ten to fifteen minutes. How I wanted to think about this. Number one, if you're struggling with sleep. Number one, I wanted to look at are you actually mentally at rest when you go to sleep or are you carrying something with you when you go to sleep, because a lot of times we are thinking we are taking rest, but we are taking rest physically, but mentally we are not taking rest.
Speaker 2: We're still thinking about what should I do tomorrow? What should I do about this situation. We are worried, we are anxious. That's why the Bible says, stop worrying about anything and start praying about everything. That's why the Bible says over and over and over again that you need to stop being anxious, do not be anxious, do not worry. But we need to cast cares on the Lord. Why because the Bible is clear that we need to get to that place where we're saying, Lord Lord, I don't want to carry this.
Speaker 2: I want to be free mentally when I go to sleep. I want to pray and release this over you. Guys that if you're struggling with sleep because you're worried, I pray that today will be a prey through day, that you will experience freedom from the Lord, that you will be able to let go of every worry, every concern, and trust in the Lord, and be free mentally when you go to sleep. Be free mentally when you go to sleep. And the second thing is a lifestyle choice. And I think this is a big problem for a lot of us, including myself.
Speaker 2: You know, the gadget, the phone, especially when you talk about the blue screen on the phone or the gadget. We are seeing people who are doom scrawling over and over like or getting into social media one re left and another, or binge watching shows after shows or episodes, have the episodes, or I know people who can't go to bed without watching at least one movie every day. I mean, see, there's nothing wrong in watching something good once in a while, But what I'm saying is if that is affecting the balance and rhythm of your life, you need to be cautious.
Speaker 2: If you're not getting sleep because you're watching Netflix still three am, it's not a God problem. It's a you problem. If you are not getting sleep because you're always you know, filling your mind with you know, thoughts and worries and concerns, it's not a God problem. It's not you know, a societal problem or circumstantial problem. It is a you problem. So today I really challenge you to introspect. Are there areas where you need to make a change in your lifestyle. Maybe you need to make this change, like you know what, I'm going to keep my phone away from me when I go to bed.
Speaker 2: I'm not going to keep checking my phone for the next one hour two hours because once the blue scleen affects your mind, you will not be able to sleep immediately. Or I'm not going to keep you know, thinking about this problem. That problem may be work, business, ministry, or oh I need to get better results on social media. If you keep thinking about it, You're not going to go to sleep. So I want to pray that you will be in a place of mental peace and mental rest when you go to bed. And secondly, you will make the right lifestyle changes.
Speaker 2: Maybe some of you need to start eating early dinner so that you won't you eat late and then watch something and then it goes on and the time just passes and you just lost everything, lost track of time. But today my challenge is very simple, that you will make the right choices in your lifestyle so that you will have a healthy, balanced life, so that through that process, not only will you be productive, but you will fulfill the purpose that God has in store for you. If this encouraged you, helped you, or made you think about certain things regarding your life, I challenge you to leave a comment share this with someone because this is such a needed message for today's generation, especially that we will make the right choices and have good, healthy lifestyle, including good sleep.
Speaker 2: Emmen, God bless you guys.
