Why Lot Entertained Angels WITHOUT Knowing It ๐ฑ๐ฅ Power of Hospitality | John Giftah | Biblical Teaching
Tonight's Episode
"We live in a culture where everything is about us... but Lot went out of his way for people he didn't even know." โ John GiftahIn Part 2 of our series on the life of Lot, we look at a side of Lot often overlooked: his radical hospitality. In a world dominated by "selfie culture" and the "what's in it for me" mindset, Lotโs actions in Genesis 19 challenge us to go the extra mileโeven when thereโs no immediate benefit.
Did you know that Lot entertained angels without even realizing it? Today, we explore why having a "good heart" and being sensitive to the needs of others is a non-negotiable for every believer.

Speaker 1: Welcome to Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta.
Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Welcome to this edition of the Fuel for the Soul with John Gifta podcast. We are looking at various lessons this week from the life of Lots, predominantly around Genesis chapter nineteen. One of the things I want to talk about is that that evening when the two angels came and Lot is sitting by the entrance of this city of Sodom, and he sees the two angels and he gets up to meet them. Understand something. He doesn't know that they are angels. He doesn't know that they are sent by God.
Speaker 2: He doesn't know anything. Okay. He then welcomed them about with his face to the ground, and he said, come to my house to wash your feet and be my guests for the night. Then you can get up in the morning and be on your way again. Okay. So look at one of the qualities of Lot that we can understand here is that he doesn't even know who these two men are. He doesn't know who they are because the angels didn't come with some wings and all of that, like the angels came like ordinary men. So they didn't realize or Lot didn't realize or his family didn't realize that these men were actually angels.
Speaker 2: He just thought it was just some random men. And he says, hey, guys, come, come, come, come to my home be my guest. And the two men actually say, well, we'll just spend the night out here in the city square okay. But Lot insisted, saying, hey, no, you have to come, and then they went with him. Now I want you to understand it, goes on to say, Lot prepared a feast for them. Okay. He prepares a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without east, and they ate. Okay. Now I wanted to think about something very important.
Speaker 2: Here he went to prepare a feast for people he did not even know. Now, I want you to think about this, right, we live in a culture where everybody's living for themselves. What's in it for me? It's all about me. What am I going to get in this? I want this, I want that. I want to see growth, I want to see my money, I want to see this. It's always been like all about the SELFI culture image of myself. It's all about what I can get, what can I benefit out of this? So we are living in a culture where everything is about us, revolves around us.
Speaker 2: But you see here we look at Lot, who's going out of the way to prepare a fees, out of the way to insist. So even when the men say no, we'll stay here, Lot could have just said, okay, fine, I did my part of asking. He could have said that, but he insisted, saying, ain't guys know you come home? Come home. Look look at Lord's gift of hospitality, right, Like, think about this like he was a very hospitable person even though he was staying in a very wicked place. My question to you today is this, how hospitable are you?
Speaker 2: Like? Are you going the extra mile for people who do you don't even know who they are. Like Lot did not know these were angels who are sent by God to actually protect or save him. He had no idea.
Speaker 1: You know.
Speaker 2: The scripture talks about how people have actually encountered angels without even knowing that they were angels. So imagine in your life, like I always say this, Like God, what if I actually encountered angels. I didn't even know I was encountering angels in the sense that sometimes you know, like we are so caught up with like oh, I have to do this, I have to do that, I have to go here, I have to finish this, I have to see this growth. I have to see my work, my ministry, the podcast, the various aspects of my life.
Speaker 2: But I always go back to God. In the all of the hustle and hustle of life. Am I paying attention to a guest who's coming? Or maybe in little sense, it could may not be a guest like how Lot entertained these angels. It could be maybe somebody in need, or it could be somebody for whom you need to just send an encouraging word. It could be somebody for whom you need to just maybe send out some money because you know that it's struggling. Maybe it could be somebody who just needs a smile and encouragement.
Speaker 2: See think about this. We live in a time where it's all about lust, what can I get, what can I benefit? But when we look at Lot, one of the things we see from Lord's story is that even though he doesn't know that he's going to get any benefit out of this, he went out of the way to prepare a meal. He went out of the way to persevere and say, hey, guys, come home. He insisted, He persisted and said come home, because one more thing, he knew about the place. He knew how wicked the place was, and how if these men stayed in the city square, the wicked men would come and attack them, and you know all the negative things that can happen.
Speaker 2: So he knew about the place, so he didn't want them to go through that. He had a good heart. He didn't live with this attitude of indifference, like why should I be bothered? Man if something happens to them, if it happens to them, is I'm no and I'm not responsible. Lot could have lived like that, A lot of people live like that today. Why should I bother about this person they're suffering. Let them suffer if they came in, who asked them to come here? It's my life. I don't have to take unnecessary trouble.
Speaker 2: Maybe some family members of Lot could have said, hey, why are you bringing these men and men? You know those men will come and attack and all of that you will get into more trouble. Why do you want unnecessary trouble? Lot could have faced all these things. See, we read these stories like a story book, thinking like a lot in invited and the guests came. But think about the possibilities, like all the conversations that could have happened, all the thought processes he had to deal with, like why should I get into unnecessary trouble because later the wicked men in the city come and attack him.
Speaker 2: All of these things happen because he's entertaining these angels, so he goes through all of this for people he doesn't even know. Think about this. My question is when we can learn from a Lot that if he was going the extra mile for two people he doesn't even know, how much more you and I can go the extra mile for the people got placed in our life that we know need our encouragement, that we know need our support, that we know or need our maybe sometimes financial support or maybe just a smile, whatever it is, be there for people, show that hospitality.
Speaker 2: I pray that God will fill you with that gift of being there for people and standing by and being a person who's showing that hospitality. I really challenge you to leave a comment and share this with someone and never see you back next time. God bless you.
